Met Gala 2022
After a pandemic-induced change of schedule, the Met Gala returned to its traditional place on the First Monday in May. Ostensibly a lavish fundraiser for the museum’s costume institute, it has since changed into a celebrity costume party. Tom Ford lamented that the Met Gala:
used to just be very chic people wearing very beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century. You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.
Even if you don’t like how social media rewards stars for dressing more and more outrageously, we do still pay attention. Vogue has a best dressed list here, and Elle dropped an enormous “Met Gala Guide”. Gen Z mega-star Emma Chamberlain was “dripping” in Cartier diamonds as she interviewed attendees1 on the red carpet.
Vanity Fair went inside Bemelmans, while The Cut has a very good play-by-play from The Mark Hotel lobby, steps away from the Met entrance. Apparently they had a Jean Georges hot dog cart for post-show snacks.
We chat more about the Met Gala in our podcast this week.
Accessories Launch
Pyer Moss debuted its long awaited Women’s accessories & footwear collection, launching a cross body geometrical Build bag as well as a Schiaparelli-esque Embrace with magnetic hands that give the bag a hug.
They are made in Italy in the same factories that Bottega Veneta uses (he got in through his “fairy godmother” Francesca Bellettini of YSL).
The women’s shoes look great too: there is a translucent heel Glass Sandal, a boot and a gladiator.2
A lot more of this is coming from Pyer Moss, and we would expect these to do well; $1800 is a great price for 100% leather, made in Italy designer bags.
Sotheby’s Lots
A few days ago, bidding wrapped on Sotheby’s third auction of objects from the estate of former Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld. There was plenty of art, and hand drawn sketches. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the drawings were doing best.
A lot of 12 designer sunglasses (with the “salesroom notice” that “sunglasses were made for Karl Lagerfeld's correction” went for almost 6000 euros. Some were Chrome Hearts!
Our personal fave was his lambskin glove collection, though it didn’t attract many bids:
But the showstopper had to be his iPod Nano collection. Across 5 lots, Sotheby’s auctioned off 310 iPod Nano’s, all containing music loaded onto them by Karl’s assistants over the years. (Example here.)
