Take My Breath Away
It’s Memorial Day Weekend, which means summer movie season is upon us. We’re not planning on seeing movies indoors any time soon, but did find a work around: drive in theaters.
Raquel and I both wanted to see the new Top Gun installment, and decided to hit a drive in to see it Friday night. And we really enjoyed it: at age 59, Tom Cruise looking just as good (or even better?) than he did when the original came out in 1986; a re-do of the iconic beach volleyball scene; and lots of actual flying, ideal to be seen on an actual big screen and not your tiny TV or iPad.
Usually sequels like this are a huge let down - examples here and here. But this one did it right: just the right amount of nostalgia and a simple plot. Raquel’s only complaint is that Jon Hamm could have played in that beach football game.
We chat more about Tom Cruise and Top Gun on this week’s podcast.
PF22 Campaigns
It’s not even June yet, and the celebrity-packed Pre Fall 2022 campaigns are starting to hit.
Loewe has a whole range of stars in absurdist situations, like Kaia Gerber with a plunger:
Meanwhile, Marc Jacobs has Naomi Campbell and Jil Sander has its PF22 collection up already, if you’re looking for knit flare pants or a ribbed collar puffer.
Private Client Retailing
Mega brand Chanel, which had a huge 2021 (+50% vs 2020), announced that it will be opening stores exclusively for its top private clients.
For anyone who has seen the lines at the Chanel store in Soho, this comes as no surprise, and is likely one that competitors like Hermès and Louis Vuitton will follow.
Retailers are increasingly catering towards ultra high net worth individuals, while clients who may casually splurge on a designer brand once a year are seen as less valuable.
The logical extension of this thesis is to create a separate, white glove experience that only certain top clients will ever get to experience.
Summah Sunglasses
It’s Memorial Day Weekend, when thoughts turn to the beach, the pool and getting outside. These Prada Linea Rossa sunglasses remind us both of actual mountaineering sunglasses AND over sunglasses. Prada also is heavily marketing their new Symbole silhouette which looks better for Women’s than Men’s. Then there is Bottega’s Art Deco Mitre and its unibrow Ridge. And for the truly outlandish: these Kiko Kostadinov acetate aviators are sure to unsettle guests at your next BBQ.
