EABA Wedding
Last week, we talked about Kourtney Kardashian’s wedding being sponsored by Dolce & Gabbana.
Bode took a different route for founder Emily Bode’s wedding to Aaron Aujla: they enlisted the entire Bode team produce the wedding, and created a capsule collection to go with it.
There are lots of fun items: a crochet ball, and the sold-out After Party shirt.
With all of the marigolds, the wedding had a very Darjeeling Limited feel to it. Plenty of industry stars were in attendance: Jeremy O. Harris, Sam Hine, Ella Emhoff, Kirby Jean-Raymond and Tyler Mitchell were all there wearing custom Bode.
As we said last week, shoppable weddings are definitely going to become more of a thing. First Kourtney, now Emily, next Kim selling Balenciaga or SKIMS at her next wedding.
We chat more about Bode and the Bode Wedding on this week’s podcast.
New/Old Music
While listening to the “Top 25: NYC” playlist, I was pretty surprised to see Kate Bush in the top 10. I didn’t think much of it, only to later read that her 1985 song called “Running Up That Hill” is exploding on the charts after being included in Season 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix. I’ve never listened to Kate Bush much, but the drum on this song is so catchy, and the song has been on repeat around here.
For new music, we’ve been listening to Harry’s House, which has been No. 1 in the country for two weeks in a row now, as well as Horsegirl, a Chicago-based indie band. They sound like vintage Yo La Tengo & Pavement - and yet the entire band is from Gen Z! The 90’s are back! Really enjoyed listening to their too-short debut Versions of Modern Performance.
A First Birthday Party
Our daughter Noemi turned ONE this week, and we couldn’t help but celebrate her big day. We tried to pull out all the stops - a custom balloon wall from the local balloon atelier, homemade strawberry baby cakes, a dress from Maisonette, and a photographer.
Needless to say, things didn’t go fully to plan. It rained all morning, which pretty much never happens here, and the balloonist tried to quote us $750 for an installation (No thank you!). We decided to make our own balloon wall, which meant I literally spent hours just making balloons last weekend.
Nobody told me being a father means tying 250 balloons at 11PM on a Friday night after work, and I’m told the stakes get even higher as Noemi gets older.
In the end, Noemi was the star of the party and outshined everything we tried to orchestrate, as she should and as she will continue to do.
Comp Shopping
One of the benefits of working in fashion is spending time “comp shopping” - i.e., seeing what the competition is up to. San Francisco doesn’t quite have the density to support the number of boutiques that NYC or LA has, but research told me that the best shopping in the Bay Area was the Valley Fair Westfield mall in San Jose.
The last real indoor shopping mall we’ve been to is the Hudson Yards ghost town on the West Side of Manhattan. The malls in temperate California, meanwhile, are bustling and very indoor/outdoor. Huge doors open to the outside, and even the indoor sections don’t feel crowded at all, despite plenty of people shopping on a Tuesday. All of the restaurants (except Din Tai Fung, unfortunately) have outdoor dining patios.
All of the luxury stores I visited had a check in process, something I hadn't seen before. Louis Vuitton had me digitally check in, while Bottega, Prada and Balenciaga all had me wait until a sales associate was available to escort me around the store.
We always love getting out to see retail establishments like Valley Fair, which we hear does very well, being in the heart of Silicon Valley. Now we just need to get down to Orange County to check out South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island!
