RIP
Gaetano Pesce - the Italian designer who famously abhorred straight lines - passed away last week at the age of 84:
Mr. Pesce, who was born in Italy but spent much of his life in New York City, may be best known for his translucent, brilliantly colored objects, including bowls, vases and trays, which he made by pouring resin into molds, then adding dyes that he chose on the spot. Other pieces, including tables, chairs and lamps, were made of hard plastic, also with vibrant pigments added extemporaneously.
In recent years, he started working closely with Bottega Veneta, fabricating 400 resin chairs for their show:
As well as co-designing a line of handbags in April of last year:
The ability of artists like Pesce to find common ground with luxury brands like Bottega speaks to the needs of major fashion houses to be seen as more than just a collection of accessories, shoes and ready-to-wear. They seek something more timeless, in hopes of justifying their prices and scarcity.
And it also allows avant grade artists with lifelong art world bonafides to find new audiences late in their career.
Eclipse Earrings
As new Fall product starts to hit shop floors, a jewelry trendlet we’ve been seeing is oversized disc earrings: flat metallic plates, often bigger than the clients ear,
Jil Sander’s is stamped with their logo on the bottom of the disc, and comes in gold or silver:
And the new Phoebe Philo drop has slightly smaller madallions, at a slightly more friendly $800 price point:
These statement pieces are something that you can wear through the end of summer to your happy hours, your summer Fridays, and weekend beach excursions. And don’t worry, for those of you with sensitive lobes, don’t worry - they are both clip ons!
Low Profile
And if you’re going to wearing to be wearing loud earrings, maybe pair it with something less flashy on the foot? These ALAÏA ballet flats may not be particularly understated, but they are comfortable and don’t have a heel:
I would happily wear these flats out and about. They also make a less-bedazzled version with a cross-pattern strap:
Rory Satran is on the case for the WSJ.
And Harper’s has a nice collection of kitten heels, though the seem to be sold out of the Isabel Marant pumps they used in the asset:
