Palme d’Or
Cannes wrapped last week, with a few films coming out of the festival with critical buzz. Leading the pack is Killers of the Flower Moon, another Scorcese/Di Caprio pic based on the novel by David Grann on the early days of the FBI. The other heavy hitters debuting new films were Wes Anderson and his Asteroid City, which features pretty much every A-List actor in Hollywood:
And Pedro Almodóvar does his own take on Brokeback Mountain in his new feature Strange Way of Life, which includes a regal looking green leather jacket on Ethan Hawke. And perhaps the most-talked about film was May December starring Julianne Moore and her character’s marriage to a much, much younger husband. There isn’t yet a trailer available, but this short scent from the film is available on YT.
And as of the parties: Graydon Carter hosted a widely attended party for AirMail at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden Roc.
Resort 2024 Shows
With the onset of summer, the fashion season is kicking back into again after a few months off. Resort 2024 shows are happening now, with SS24 shows following soon.
The Row debuted a new double breasted coat, which came down the runway in Paris in three different colors. (And their Men’s and Women’s private sale is happening now!)
Balenciaga, currently keeping a low profile after attracting some recent unwanted attention, staged some shoots on Place Vendôme and next to the Arc de Triomphe but didn’t actually hold a true runway show. While they may be turning down the volume on their communications, they continue to churn out product like this Oscar The Grouch coat.
The basic operating principle of Chanel these days seems to be, our customer will be buy anything that says “Chanel” on it. It no longer matter what it looks like. Take, for example, the $10,000 F1 T-Shirt, or more recently, their Resort 2024 show:
LA Galleries
The international art galleries are continuing to expand their footprints in LA. Hauser & Wirth renovated a former flour mill in Downtown LA and opened a gallery space, shop and popular restaurant that has been a mainstay of the arts district.
And David Zwirner just opened its first Los Angeles location in the unheralded Melrose Hill neighborhood:
Last Tuesday, in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Melrose Hill, the once desolate stretch of Western Avenue right below Melrose had what could have been the biggest gathering ever seen by the area. Around 6 p.m., a wave of hundreds of people flowed to the block for the opening of mega-dealer David Zwirner’s first galleries on the West Coast. In one building were new paintings by Njideka Akunyili Crosby, an LA-based artist fiercely in demand, partially because she makes only a handful of works per year. Despite the fact that she’s been showing at museums for a decade and has seen her work sell for $4.7 million at auction, this was her first solo gallery show in the United States—and her first with Zwirner since joining the gallery five years ago.
Hosting Etiquette
On one of Raquel’s favorite podcasts, Lauren Santo Domingo aka LSD, a co-founder of Moda Operandi and NYC socialite, talks about hosting do’s and do nots. This struck a chord with us, as we have frequently hosted or been guests a various house parties over the years. (Less so since Noemi was born!)
In particular, she talked about whether guests should have to take their shoes off when visiting. LSD talked about how she felt strongly that guests should not be asked to take off their footwear unless the invitation specifically calls this out. After all, aren't shoes a key part of one’s outfit?
We are a shoes-off household, but have always been torn about this. Do we force guests to pad around barefoot? Or provide everyone with their slippers? We’ve since given up trying to enforce our no-shoes-inside rule for larger groups, but perhaps we just need to acquire a collection of nice slippers for guest use.
Feel free to give the podcast a listen here! As a bonus, Wes Gordon, the creative director of Carolina Herrera, talks about their recent show in Rio.

Another excellent addition to the “how much does it cost to live in NYC” genre.
