The House of Gucci
Last week, we alluded to the upcoming film The House of Gucci and it’s worth pausing on the film briefly. It’s based on the real life story that saw Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Gucci scion Maurizio Gucci, attempt to assassinate her ex-husband. Reggiani is full of great quotes like this:
I would rather weep in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle.
The production is in the news because the Gucci family (which is no longer closely affiliated with the Gucci brand, as it sold its stake in the early 1990’s), is not happy with some of the choices the film has made. These include casting Al Pacino, who apparently isn’t considered handsome enough to play Maurizio Gucci’s grandfather, and Lady Gaga’s failure to personally approach Reggiani for a meeting.
The images that were released earlier this Spring are looking enticing:
We are definitely excited on multiple levels for the film: the star power, sets in Milan and Lake Como, and of course, the 1970’s era Gucci costumes.
SS21 Athleisure
Raquel has been planning out her exercise looks for the summer. She loves following Belen Hostalet on IG, who recently launched her own sustainable athleisure line called Manola. The naked shoulder style is her fave:
And of course, we need sandals to complete the look. Arizona Love Sandals look like Teva’s that have been fashioned from vintage bandanas.
They are most well known for the Trekky, and Raquel likes the Black Bandana best:
Salomon Sportstyle
Hypebeast has a nice long profile of Salomon, and how they went from being a niche French alpine sportswear company to collaborating with the likes of Comme des Garçons. It can be traced back to when JP Lalonde took over the Sportstyle division of Salomon. Lalonde has deepened Sportstyle’s relationship with leading Parisian retailer The Broken Arm while expanding its roster of collaborators further (we’ve particularly liked this one with and wander and this one with Fumito Ganryu).
The XT-6 has become the iconic Sportstyle silhouette, which has expanded away from traditional racing colors into lifestyle hues:
I got to meet JP in Paris, who just exuded love for his Sportstyle project. It’s been exciting to see what he has built, and we’re expecting Salomon Sportstyle to keep the hits coming.
Fly Fishing Meets Streetwear
South2 West8 is a trendy, Japanese fly fishing brand that has recently broken into the US market. Along with Engineered Garments and Needles, it’s part of team Nepenthes, and offers an enormous line with standouts like this mesh camo parka.
They recently teamed up with Supreme on a fishing capsule, and I really laughed at this image from the lookbook:
Though trout season officially just opened in the Catskills, it’s hard to believe we’re going to see any Supreme x South2 West8 on the Delaware River any time soon. While fishing gear is very on trend, a streetwear collab is probably a step too far.
Allbirds Ballet Flats
Unbeknownst to us, Allbirds released a women’s ballet flat made of Eucalyptus fibers that is machine washable. Compare to the Rothy’s ballet flat, which is made from recycled plastic bottles:
They look pretty similar, though the Allbirds Tree Breezer does have a ribbed collar. Are these two DTC San Francisco competitors eventually going to merge? They seem very complementary, with Allbirds doing well with Men’s sneakers and Rothy’s ruling the ballet flat world.
Perhaps once Allbirds completes its IPO, it will use the new funds to go on a buying spree.
