Adele & Taylor Swift
Both Adele and Taylor Swift released albums in the past few weeks, both of which have been playing as we’ve been driving around over Thanksgiving weekend.
Taylor Swift’s album is actually a re-recording of Red, her fourth album. It is part of a much publicized campaign to re-record all of her old albums. Swift doesn’t own the rights to her old albums (the rights were sold to a public equity firm) and she is on a mission to control her own back catalogue of songs.
Adele’s album, 30, hasn’t received the rave reviews that Taylor’s re-release of Red has garnered. It’s a sparse album, with little backing up Adele’s vocals. Think the hotel band from Lost in Translation, or the jazz trio that plays at the midtown Hillstone. But for us, this album hits the muzak sweet spot.
In other Adele news, her boyfriend Rich Paul (Lebron James’ super agent) recently publicized their relationship. Hilariously, Paul’s first IG post with his girlfriend seemingly prioritized his proximity to Oprah over Adele.
Q3 Results
Retailers started reporting their Q3 results, and it’s been pretty scary for some big players. Nordstrom saw their stock drop 25% with its Rack businesses shrinking compared to 2019. Gap Inc.’s stock dropped 15% after forecasting that supply chain disruptions would trim sales by almost a billion dollars on the year.
However, not everyone is having the same difficulties. In its Q3 investor call, Macy’s raised guidance for the year, and its stock popped over 20% in one day on the news. Kohl’s also raised guidance, with sales increasing by 16% in Q3 and its stock jumping 11% in one trading session.
The retail world is in a weird place right now. Customers are ready to shop, but in some cases, inventory is stuck in ports, or is held up by a lack of truck drivers. Some companies are successfully navigating this, and others aren’t. And it’s not going to let up anytime soon - this is going to be a 2022 issue as well.
Gabriela Hearst’s Chloé
We’ve been coveting the new Chloé, now that Gabriela Hearst’s designs are starting to hit stores. This alphabet ring has a lot of possibilities, and reminds me of the Maya Brenner necklaces that we used to crush it with at Steven Alan. Their new recycled cashmere dress is jaw-dropping, as is the matching slipper set:
And in non-Chloé items, Raquel is eyeing these trays from Anastasio Home. The perfect catchall for sunglasses, keys or hors d’oeuvres.
Dua Lipa’s Newsletter
It seems that Tourist Trapp has some competition. Pop star Dua Lipa announced this week that she is launching her own newsletter. As she described to Vogue:
“I’ve dreamed about this for so long. It’s a massive hobby of mine – I’ve always compulsively made lists of everything: my favorite places to eat, my favorite places to stay. Honestly, if I were to show you the Notes app on my phone right now…”
For us, it’s our Notes app supplemented with our Maps app. I currently have 515 locations starred in NYC, and whenever Raquel looks at my Google Maps she says it looks “diseased.”
Welcome to the newsletter game, DL!
