Men’s Beauty
Timothée Chalamet is the new face of Bleu de Chanel, their men’s fragrance:
Chalamet embodies (and defines) a different kind of masculinity than the generations of leading men who came before him. Chalamet is non-threatening, the opposite of Pitt (or even Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras, the Argentine polo player who was the longtime face of Ralph Lauren and its Polo scents). Chalamet wears pink Glossier hoodies; Pitt in his peak was all glistening six pack and cigarettes in Fight Club.
Think Harry Styles, Pharrell, or Bad Bunny, all of whom are poster children for “modern masculinity” and more gender-fluid dressing. Chanel is going after younger customers, as the brand has fallen behind its competitors on TikTok, after Armani, Dior and Paco Rabanne.
Tom Ford, an OG billionaire men’s beauty icon who just sold his brand to Estée Lauder, talks about his regime on this week’s AirMail podcast. He recommends blotting or matte powder for under your eyes to reduce the light reflection and make you look younger.
Restaurant Divorces
Horses is (was?) a very trendy LA restaurant that opened in September 2021 to much acclaim, not only for the food but the decor and its celebrity clientele.
And then this week, news broke that their husband/wife co-chefs in charge of the kitchen were embroiled in a terrible sounding divorce:
Horses chef and co-owner Liz Johnson has accused her husband and co-owner Will Aghajanian of abuse, as well as killing the family’s cats, in a divorce filing, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Johnson filed for a domestic violence restraining order against Aghajanian in November 2022, where she alleged that her husband physically assaulted her and killed cats. Aghajanian denied the claims in court filings calling them “false allegations.” Over the past few days, anonymous posters as well as industry insiders and journalists have been alluding to rumors around alleged behaviors from the Horses chef-co-owners.
As Eater noted, the restaurant still seems to be open and taking reservations via Resy.
Members Only
Vogue Club is new members-only group that the Condé Nast publication offers access to for a few hundred dollars a year. That gets you face time with certain Vogue editors, behind the scenes tours and other assorted gifts.
One of the perks is getting invited to exclusive events, like a private showing of the new Karl Lagerfeld show at the Met. Raquel was able to go see the show Wednesday night after the Met had closed. There were plenty of sliders and an open bar, though the show itself felt a little claustrophobic, even though it was after hours. Raquel wondered if she really would have been able to see the incredible detail work if she was there with the public during normal hours.
All in all, she is enjoying her Vogue Club membership and is trying to get into the next behind the scenes tour of the Vogue offices.
Grand Tour
We had to skip the last two week’s newsletters as I (Chris) was in Europe visiting family and also there for work. And also we had to celebrate Mother’s Day right.
I flew to Paris and had a long layover in CDG at their beautiful new Air France lounge, and then was on to Vienna for the weekend to see my brother and my niece.
After a few days of Viennese coffee, Sacher torte and Beethoven, I flew back to Paris for market. After a whirlwind 3 days of meetings, it was back to the US.
While I was there, I managed to talk my way into the Cristaseya showroom to buy Raquel some pants, and check out their ceramic collection.
Overall, a 10/10 trip though I did miss Raquel and Noemi dearly!
We will be back with our podcast next week!
