The Supers
We started watching the new Apple TV series “The Super Models” that looks back on the careers of four megawatt supermodels: Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.
“The Super Models” travels back to the 1980s, when four women from different corners of the world united in New York. Already forces in their own right, the gravitas they achieved by coming together transcended the industry itself. Their prestige was so extraordinary that it enabled the four to supersede the brands they showcased, making the names Naomi, Cindy, Linda and Christy as prominent as the designers who styled them.
There is a lot we did not know about them, like that Cindy Crawford received a scholarship to Northwestern to study chemical engineering. But’s also a crazy time capsule of how the world was different back in the 80’s and 90’s: Cindy and Christy both get their start in catalogue modeling, something that barely exists today. Linda and Naomi started flying around the world - unsupervised by their parents! - when they were still teenagers!
Before these women, models were, outside of a few exceptions1, completely anonymous. That has completely changed, in large part thanks to their legacy.
Paris Fashion Week
Paris Fashion Week has seemed a little more subdued than the prior week in Milan, perhaps because Raquel got to attend Milan or maybe it’s just because Paris falls at the end of the calendar.
Loewe walked some giant knitted capes down the runway:
The entire Beckham clan was in the front row for Mom’s runway show. Marni showed in Paris for the first time ever. Gabriela Hearst danced her way out of Chloé at her last show there as Creative Director. Sarah Burton, Alexander’s long-time deputy, had her last curtain call at McQueen.
And lastly, Christian Cowan walked a model down the runway in a girl fur ball outfit, who then promptly became disoriented and lost.
Phoebe Philo
We have a date. Former Celine creative director Phoebe Philo will be launching her new namesake line on October 30, something the fashion world has been waiting for anxiously ever since she retired abruptly in 2018.
As we mentioned, it is rumored to be a luxury version of the slow fashion brands that have been proliferating like Cristaseya and Old Stone Trade. There is not much info to be gleaned by reading the tea leaves that are now starting to be made public, but we do hope there is a bit a glam mixed into the understated minimalism she is known for and will surely represent.
