Fashion industry titan Virgil Abloh passed away, after a long battle from cancer that he kept hidden from public view. The Louis Vuitton show held at Art Basel turned in to a public memorial, at which the late LV artistic director was feted.
It’s hard to overstate Abloh’s impact on the fashion industry both as a black creative director and in helping streetwear break into the luxury price tier. Just look at his tearful embrace of Kanye West at Abloh’s first Louis Vuitton show.

Zara Musical Chairs
Marta Ortega, daughter of Zara found and Spain’s richest man Amancio Ortega, will be taking control of the company in Q2 next year1.
Succession at the continent’s big fashion will be big news in the coming years. Francois Pinault, age 86, started a timber business that turned into luxury powerhouse Kering. Bernard Arnault, age 72, inherited an engineering company that he built into LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods company.
It remains to be seen how Ortega, only 37, will perform. However, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a woman taking over; women power the fashion industry, both as customers and designers, and yet it’s not reflected in top leadership positions. Ortega will immediately become one of the most powerful women in the industry come April 2022.
