PFW: Balenciaga
Shows continued in Paris last week, with the Balenciaga show getting the most attention. Last week we mentioned the amazing invitations that went out on damaged iPhone models.
For the show, Demna created a giant snow globe, complete with real snow, real wind and fake lightning that the models walked through.
Initially meant to be an apocalyptic statement on climate change, it morphed into a comment on the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Balenciaga creative director was himself displaced from his home in the Caucusus by the Russian military in the 1990’s, and the recent news brought back memories of his family’s exodus1.
The last two looks were unmistakably a Ukrainian flag diptych.
What about the actual clothes? The caution tape mummy wrap got all the attention, especially with Kim K wearing the look (and having to be cut out of it afterwards)2.
Of course, it’s hard to do anything truly original these days. While Balenciaga clearly had a bigger budget, Alexander McQueen did this snow-and-ice show first in 1999.
On this week’s podcast, we chat more about Balenciaga, Demna, his first couture collection and the SS15 Vestments skirt that Raquel fell in love with at The Broken Arm.
Weekend House Kids
With our daughter Noemi growing so fast (99th percentile for height!), we have had to rapidly refresh her wardrobe over the past few months. Usually that means using Raquel’s generous employee discount at Baby Gap or Old Navy, but we do need to diversify from time to time.
While shopping for her, we’ve been admiring Weekend House Kids. They are Catalan kids brand that use GOTS-certified organic cotton and feature ADORABLE prints and artwork on their items.
Age appropriate clothes for her are all extremely short - think Rafa Nadal at the French Open! So we’ve been buying one or two sizes up for her, and rolling her sleeves up. We have a few more months of buying Baby before we need to start moving her to Toddler.
Liquid I.V.
Hydration is really serious in California. People carry around their water bottles everywhere out here - much more so than in NYC. And yet, we don’t love being attached to our Prada, Our Legacy Workshop x Sigg and Collina Strada3 water bottles.
We’ve been testing out hydration multipliers from Liquid I.V. in Passion Fruit, Acai Berry and Lemon Lime flavors.
The idea behind this is that with the right combination of sugar, salt and water, the body can be hydrated faster.
We weren’t super excited about these after testing. All the flavors taste extremely sweet. Essentially, these are powdered Gatorade packets with better flavors. Raquel had to double the recommended water content to make them palatable - perhaps that’s why they are so hydrating! Maybe next time we’re running or biking we can pack these, but they don’t seem like a replacement for water bottles.

The full statement he wrote is worth a read: “The war in Ukraine has triggered the pain of a past trauma I have carried in me since 1993, when the same thing happened in my home country and I became a forever refugee. Forever, because that’s something that stays in you. The fear, the desperation, the realization that no one wants you. But I also realized what really matters in life, the most important things, like life itself and human love and compassion. This is why working on this show this week was so incredibly hard for me. Because in a time like this, fashion loses its relevance and its actual right to exist. Fashion week feels like some kind of an absurdity. I thought for a moment about cancelling the show that I and my team worked hard on and were all looking forward to. But then I realized that canceling this show would mean giving in, surrendering to the evil that has already hurt me so much for almost 30 years. I decided that I can no longer sacrifice parts of me to that senseless, heartless war of ego. This show needs no explanation. It is a dedication to fearlessness, to resistance, and to the victory of love and peace. xx Demna”
